The Heitman “Rita” Adventure
Well here is the long draw out story of how the Heitman’s, except Chris, escaped from Rita. Since I work for a Nursing Home, we were told that we had to evacuate. I decided to take the three children with me because Chris was going to stay home long enough to board up the windows. The residents, staff and our families pulled out at 7:30 pm on Wed. The residents made it 24 hours later and us department heads made it 48 hours later. Now remember that this is normally a 2 and 1/2 hour drive. Can you imagine driving 48 hours straight with three kids. Thank God for the DVD machine. I have to say that the children were great throughout the whole ordeal. We were in the Piney Woods for 17 hours. This was right when they began to announce that the Piney Woods was the worst place to be. While we were in Lufkin, we stayed at a church. I was in charge of the staff kids while the staff was working with the nursing homes. We had to place our 113 residents in two different nursing homes. We were taken care of by the church members and our administrator’s girlfriend who owns a bakery. The positive from all of this is that I will be getting a new phone for the house because Chris decided to talk and mow at the same time. While he was talking on the phone, it slipped out of his hand and fell in the mower blades. Bye Bye phone. We finally made it home on Monday at 5:30 am. We are all home now and trying to get caught up on our sleep. I hope all is well.
